Principal Gomez

Hello TEAM U!

Welcome to a new and exciting year at Upland High School! It is my fourth year as the principal and I am so proud to share the amazing achievements of our students and staff. We had a fantastic year, and I can't wait to see what we accomplish next.

In sports, our Girls Flag Football and Boys Soccer teams became league champions! Our Boys Volleyball team continued their incredible run, becoming league champions for the fifth year in a row! Twelve of our wrestlers qualified for CIF, five moved on to Masters, and two made it to State. Girls Softball, Boys and Girls Tennis, Girls Soccer, Esports, Boys and Girls Water Polo, Boys Golf, and nine swimmers all made it to CIF playoffs! Two of our track and field events also qualified for CIF State.

Artistically, our Band Regiment and Color Guard were finalists in the State Championships, and our Percussion team became the SCPA Scholastic A Class Champions! For the first time in Upland’s history, our Jazz Band was named a Top 5 Band at the California State Jazz Championships! Our Theater actors received significant recognition, with 23 students earning superior recognition at the California State Thespian Festival, including five state champions!

Academically, we have a lot to celebrate. Twenty-two students qualified for state History Day, and three students made it to the state Science Fair, with two seniors advancing to Nationals! Our Highlander scholars took on the challenge of Advanced Placement classes, completing 934 AP exams this year and we had the highest AP Pass rate compared to the last 5 years at UHS.

Beyond our many achievements in academics, arts, and athletics, we are especially proud that our recent staff, student, and family surveys yielded the highest positive ratings in four years. These outstanding results confirm that our focus on mutual trust and respect creates a positive atmosphere where students feel safe and valued, empowering them to thrive. This is clearly reflected in our increased attendance rates, significantly reduced chronic absenteeism, and suspension rates at their lowest levels. It's clear Highlanders are happy to be at UHS!

As we start this year, our focus will be on making learning even better. We are excited about engaging students in a structured manner, making sure teachers clearly identify the learning intention and success criteria, asking more engaging questions, using data to have collaborative conversations to adjust our instruction, and ensuring the safety of everyone at school.

Get ready for an amazing year ahead! Let’s go!
