Why Choose Advanced Placement (AP)
Taking an AP course is about more than just a test at the end of the year; it’s about challenging yourself and getting a head start on your future.
In an AP course, your hard work is rewarded with a "weighted" grade. Because these classes are more rigorous, they carry more weight in your Grade Point Average. For example, a B earned in a weighted course is calculated as 4.0 points instead of 3.0
| Letter Grade | Standard Point Value |
AP Point Value (Weighted) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4 | 5 |
| B | 3 | 4 |
| C | 2 | 3 |
The AP Advantage
-
University-Recognized Excellence AP is the most widely accepted advanced curriculum in the United States. Whether applying to a UC, CSU, or out-of-state private university, AP scores provide a transparent and trusted measure of a student's academic rigor.
-
Tangible College Savings By scoring well on AP exams, UUSD students can earn significant college credit before they even graduate high school. This allows students to skip introductory college courses, saving thousands of dollars in tuition and potentially graduating from university a semester or even a year early.
-
Customized Academic Pathways Unlike rigid "all-or-nothing" diploma programs, our AP structure allows students to specialize. Whether your student is a future STEM innovator, a budding historian, or a gifted artist, they can tailor their course load to match their intended college major.
-
Preparation for the Rigor of Higher Ed Our AP courses are taught by College Board-certified instructors who use college-level textbooks and assessments. Students leave UHS with the study habits, writing skills, and critical thinking abilities required to thrive at the most prestigious universities.
