9th Grade Registration FAQ

Q: Can students automatically sign up for Honors English or Honors Biology?
A: Students with strong junior high grades may request these courses. If grades are low, counselors may recommend beginning with College Prep classes. Students may request Honors classes again in future years even if they do not take them in 9th grade.

Q: What are the benefits of taking Honors World History as a freshman?
A: Honors World History helps prepare motivated students for future AP Social Science courses.

Q: Does AP Human Geography meet the World History requirement?
A: No. AP Human Geography does not replace World History.

Q: Can freshmen take AP Studio Art?
A: Only with a teacher recommendation. Otherwise, all interested 9th graders begin with Intro to Art.

Q: How do students sign up for Dual Enrollment classes (Chaffey College)?
A: Registration dates for fall and spring will be announced during the school year. Students register directly with Chaffey College. UHS Dual Enrollment office can assist with registration and the Chaffey college counselor, located on UHS campus can assist with course selection.

Q: My student applied to U’College (Early College). What should they put on their academic plan?
A: They should select their 9th grade classes along with one Early College course.

Q: What are Pathways, and how does my student join one?
A: Pathways are elective programs that offer real-world, career-focused experiences.

Q: What if my student is absent when UHS counselors visit the junior high?
A: Counselors will create a 9th grade schedule for students who are absent.

Q: Can my student change their course requests after meeting with the high school counselor?
A: Yes. Families will receive a list of requested courses from the Assistant Principal over Counseling and may
request changes at that time. There will be a short window to make changes. All course requests are made final by Spring break.  Request to change after Spring break will be addressed the first week of the school year.

Q: How will we know when tryouts are for sports, cheer, choir, band, or advanced theatre classes?
 A: Coaches and teachers will send information to the middle schools once dates are finalized. Information will also be posted on the UHS Athletics webpage

Q: Who should parents contact if they have questions or technical issues with the registration system?

A: Parents should be able to view their student’s course selections as they do at UJH, FKJH and PJH in their student’s Aeries portal. If assistance is needed, families may reach out directly to the UHS Counseling Team.

Q: How does a student sign up for 6th Period PE if they plan to play a sport?
A: Incoming 9th graders do not sign up for 6th Period PE. Coaches notify counselors if freshmen athletes should be added.

Q: Does Cheer count toward the PE requirement?
A: Yes, Cheer satisfies 10 PE credits.

Q: If my student takes Spanish 1 in junior high, will they automatically take Spanish 2 in 9th grade?

A: Students who earn a C or higher in Spanish 1 and request Spanish 2 will be placed into Spanish 2 after counselors and Spanish teachers verify appropriate placement. Some students may instead be placed in Heritage Speakers, depending on proficiency

Q: Which electives require an application or audition, and how does my student join them?
A: Courses such as Theatre 3, Chorale, AVID, Madrigals, and others require an application and/or audition. More information will be provided by teachers or counselors.

Q: What period is Marching Band?
A: Marching Band typically meets after school as a designated 7th period.

Q: Which band class should 9th graders select?
A: Most incoming freshmen enroll in Concert Band, unless band directors recommend a different placement.
